China mulls payouts over milk victims: state media

Beijing – China is considering compensation for families whose babies were killed or sickened by melamine-tainted milk, state media said Thursday.

At least six children died in China after drinking milk laced with the

industrial chemical melamine, normally used to make plastic, and a

further 294,000 suffered kidney-related problems.China's health

ministry was collecting medical records and checking information to

make preparations for compensation, the official Xinhua news agency

quoted spokesman Mao Qun'an as saying. He gave no further details.

Families affected by the tainted dairy products have been asking for compensation since the scandal came to light in September.

The issue caused international concern and led to recalls of dairy products

made in China and bans around the world, although no children outside

China are known to have died from the tainted milk.
